Parts Used: dried berries from shrub

Source: steam distillation of berries of the evergreen shrub native to the northern hemisphere. A lower grade oil with a harsh aroma is extracted from the needles and wood. Always use juniper berry oil for perfumery and aromatherapy.

Description and Odor Effect: a colorless liquid with a fresh, woody aroma reminiscent of pine but with a peppery kick, its odor effect is warming and calming.

Nature: warming, uplifting

Blends well with: citrus oils, cypress, lavender, pine, bergamot, cedarwood, sandalwood, rosemary, geranium, marjoram

Physical Uses: Juniper stimulates circulation and is a good general tonic. It is used to treat coughs, colds and influenza, cystitis, gout, haemorrhoids, flatulence, arthritic and rheumatic pain, joint problems, painful menstruation and loss of menstruation outside of pregnancy. As a detoxifier, it promotes circulation and helps alleviate cellulite, dermatitis and eczema. In skin care it is a cleanser, astringent and antiseptic oil and good for acne and oily skin conditions. Juniper works as a diuretic and antiseptic. It is good in any instance where detoxification is desired; it is especially good for relieving urine and water retention.

Mental and Emotional Uses: PMS, stress-related disorders, nervous tensions. It creates a calm clear flow for the brain and acts as a stimulant for poor memory and fatigue.

Caution: Avoid during pregnancy. Do not overuse. To be avoided by those with kidney disease as Juniper may be nephrotoxic (causing kidney disease. NEPHROLOGY - the study of kidney disease)

A warming and stimulating oil, blends well with clary sage and cypress. Try it in your morning bath.

Balanced Blend

For a balanced massage blend, combine the essential oil drops in these proportions of essential oil "notes":

  • 3 drops Base Note
  • 7 drops Middle Note
  • 5 drops Top Note

For a total of 15 drops of essential oils per 30ml (1 oz) of carrier oil.


Top Notes

Top notes are the first impression of the blend; short-lived, yet brilliant. Top notes are sharp, penetrating, first to evaporate, extreme, and either hot or cold. Top notes provide the "ahhhh" in a blend.


Middle Notes

Middle notes give body to blends - the developing phase with breadth and variety. Middle notes are warm, round, soft and mellow. Middle notes often provide the bulk, 50% to 80%, of the blend.


Base Notes

Base Notes are the final, lasting message of the blend; they deepen your blend and draw it into the skin, giving it roots and permanence. Base notes are deep, intense, rich and sensual. Base notes should be used sparingly, about 5%, so as not to overpower the blend.
