Essential Oils in the Air

Aroma Lamp: an aroma lamp has a small container that is heated after water and essential oils are added. When the water becomes hot, the aromatic vapors are dispersed into the air.

Candles: 1 – 2 drops – light the candle and wait until the wax begins to melt and then add the oils to the warm wax. Essential oils are inflammable so be careful not to get them on the wick.

Diffusors: 1 – 6 drops – these are especially made for use with essential oils. The idea of a diffusor, whether made of clay, glass or metal, is that it can heat the oils, so allowing their molecules to be released into the air. There are different types of diffusors on the market. You can choose a smaller or larger unit depending on the size of the area to be fragranced.

Inhalers: this method is handy for quick results.

Instructions: mix the essential oils in a small glass bottle and tighten the cap.

To use: open the bottle and slowly inhale the vapors deeply, fifteen to twenty times. Cap the bottle immediately after use.

Humidifiers: 1 – 9 drops add the essential oil to the water. Try to avoid the resinous oils, such as cedarwood, sandalwood, myrrh, frankincense and tea tree, as these may leave a residual and clog the filters of the humidifier.

Light Bulb And Light Bulb Ring: 1 – 2 drops – the heat generated by the light bulb can be used to release the molecules of essential oils into the atmosphere. There are various attachments made of non-flammable material or metal which can be used in conjunction with light bulbs, or add the oil to a standing light bulb when it is not switched on, and cool. Do not put the oil on to a light bulb which is already heated. Use only 1 – 2 drops – no more – or the oil may drip down the side of the bulb and into the attachment.

Mist Sprays: a convenient and effective way to disperse aromatic vapors into the air is through the use of a mist spray. As the aromas mature in the bottle, the fragrance improves and becomes stronger.

Instructions: fill a two or four ounce fine mist spray bottle with purified water and add the essential oils. Tighten the cap and shake well.

To use: shake the bottle well. Sit comfortably in a chair. Close your eyes and begin to take slow deep breaths as you spray the mist approximately ten times over your head (two to three sprays at a time).

Room Sprays: 4 or more drops per 300 ml water – use a new plant-sprayer. Put in warm but not boiling water, add the essential oil and shake before use. It can be sprayed in the air as you would any spray or on the carpets, curtains and furniture, but do not let the water fall on good wood.

Steam Inhalation: this method is usually employed to open the breathing passages.

Instructions: heat a small pot of water and pour into a bowl, then add the essential oils. Immediately drape a towel over your head, close your eyes, and lean over the vapors, inhale slowly and deeply.

Steam Room And Sauna

Steam room with rocks as a heat source – add a blend of essential oils to a container of water and toss it over the hot rocks, being careful not to be splashed as the water hits the rocks.

Other steam rooms and saunas – mist sprays made with a combination of vaporous essential oils and pure water are ideal to use in a steam or sauna. Spray the mist away from your body and face to ensure that it does not come in direct contact with your skin or eyes, since the oils can become irritating to the skin, especially in the hot steam room or sauna. Breathe in the vapors.

Water Bowl: 1 – 9 drops – put boiling water into a bowl and add the essential oils. Close doors and windows and allow five minutes for the aroma to permeate the room.
