Pneumonia is a general term for several kinds of inflammation of the lungs. It is usually caused by a bacterial or viral infection, but can also be caused by chemical damage to the lungs from inhaling a poisonous gas such as chlorine. Pneumonia is specifically in inflammation in the alveolar sacs of the lungs where exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide takes place.
